Bavarian Ministry of Transport supports pilot project "E-Flight Route Bavaria"
Hof-Plauen Airport receives 231,562 euros in funding
Aviation accounts for a significant proportion of CO2 pollution in the air. This must change if aviation is to have a future - five Bavarian airfields have now committed themselves to this goal as a pilot project.
The airfields of Augsburg, Hof-Plauen, Landshut, Kempten-Durach and Straubing-Wallmühle have joined forces to form the "E-Flugstrecke Bayern" consortium. Together, the airfields want to create a first standard of charging infrastructure for aviation. Together, the airfields are investing a total of 1.4 million euros in fast-charging stations, wall boxes and internal power infrastructure such as grid connections, PV systems and power storage units to absorb power peaks. The Bavarian Ministry of Transport is funding the pilot project with a sum of 1.09 million euros, as the project is of outstanding importance and has an important signalling effect. The funding decisions were presented to the managing directors of the airfields by Transport Minister Bernreiter at a press conference at Augsburg Airport on 18 December 2025.
Electric aircraft The future of aviation?
The Pipistrel Velis Electro (France) and Electra Solar (Kempten, Bavaria) aircraft types are already available on the market today as electrically powered aircraft for private use and flight schools. The Austrian manufacturer Diamond Aircraft is also developing and marketing the e-DA40, an electrically powered aircraft with as many as 4 seats. For flying schools and clubs in particular, these aircraft can already offer significant cost benefits compared to previous aircraft models. The only thing missing is a comprehensive charging infrastructure.
And this is exactly where the five aerodromes want to start with the "E-Flugstrecke Bayern": By setting up the charging infrastructure, the aim is to initially solve the infrastructure problem in Bavarias, while this pilot project should also be seen as a signal to the industry: We want to transform aviation into a climate-friendly mode of transport!
Aircraft made in Bavaria
Aircraft ranging in size from 9 to 19 seats are also currently being developed in Germany for commercial aviation. These include the company VAERIDION from Munich, which is developing a regional aircraft with an electric drive and plans to launch it on the market in the coming years. Prototypes of this size in particular require an existing infrastructure for certification in order to successfully complete the necessary flight tests. VAERIDION has already announced its intention to utilise the infrastructure of the "E-Flugstrecke Bayern" for its own purposes. Commercial aviation companies such as FlyVini are also planning to use electric aircraft.
Over 230,000 euros for Hof-Plauen Airport
Hof-Plauen Airport will receive pro rata funding totalling 231,562 euros from the Free State of Bavaria. In addition to the standard equipment with charging points, other sub-projects will also be realised at the airport. The project will be implemented between 2026 and 2028.
